Enjoying the Journey by Veronica Whitty (Nacreous, £10). In 1972 Whitty joined a group going overland from Victoria Station to New Delhi; it cost £72 and took 32 days - bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, as her accounts of Iran and Afghanistan, countries now very different, show. In India she worked as a volunteer with Mother Teresa and provides us with several insights into the work of the Missionaries of Charity and their foundress, then just becoming famous.
Other incidents stand out in a varied life, such as her time at a troubled Oxford college in the 1980s, whose later closure comes as no surprise.

"Enjoying the Journey" is the perfect title for Veronica Whitty`s autobiography. Her life has been packed full of world-wide travel and encounters with varied and extraordinary people, including Mother Teresa, Krishnamurti and Denise Levertov.
After growing up in a London Irish pub she was a volunteer for Mother Teresa in Calcutta, later a journalist, a businesswoman, a teacher of English to foreign students and a carer: she has also gained qualifications in Peace Studies, the Enneagram and now runs dreamwork groups. Having travelled the world she retains friendships with people of many nationalities.

Veronica`s compassionate interest and tolerant attitudes underlie her measured objective storytelling: although her deep Catholic faith is central to her life, and she has lived it out in the service of others, she also revels in the unexpected (and frequently uncomfortable) places and people she visits, always managing to retain her sense of humour, always undefeated.

The reader ends the book with a sense of a life lived to the full, totally engaged with the world as she explores and seeks to understand it.
Veronica`s often extraordinary and entertaining story is told with steady, matter-of-fact commentary which shows an impressive ability to look back over a hugely varied life in order to see the journey in its entirety, and to appreciate it fully: a truly enviable achievement.

"It`s a tour-de-force-it really pays to keep a diary and I can only admire your self-discipline in maintaining it over the years.
I did enjoy it-such a good read. It`s a great mix of admirably honest autobiography, interesting information on a great variety of topics, nice touches of humour ( I like the one about the four men choosing their last song before execution)and it has a cast of suitably diverse and eccentric people as one might expect from your varied life experiences!
